Of Lion Dance & Hindu Priests

I was recently called upon to videotape a temple anniversary celebration which proved to be rather different from what I initially thought it would be. Far from it. I would summarize the experience by saying: People of different races who live together, pray together.

Here's a clip of the video I took. Enjoy!

Who's Protecting Who?

Well, I'm back after a long hiatus. Work has taken priority over my journal updates or possibility I've ceased to care about what goes on around me to warrant a comment. Negative events which happened in the last six months, the spat between our two Prime Ministers, the blatant disregard by certain elected ministers for parliamentary accountability, the electricity and petrol price hikes just to mention a few, can really numb one's feelings.

Anyway, two pieces of news which appeared in the papers today jolted me back to reality. A burglar in Johor was set upon by no less than ten overzealous [perhaps angry] residents and was killed at the scene of his crime. Another unrelated incident took place in Malacca where one of the two snatch thieves became a victim himself and died a short distance away from where they snatched an insurance agent's handbag. Apparently, a well-meaning motorist had tried to stop them but must have lost control of his car and rammed into their getaway motorbike from the back. His accomplice must have escaped on foot. So much for friends.

These two incidents, albeit not the first but seem to be increasingly a common reaction where ordinary citizens have taken the law into their own hands, are quite disturbing. The signs are there that the people have lost confidence in the police's ability in solving crimes. Allegations of rampant corruption and abuse of power in the force have continuously been swept under the carpet while the delay in the setting up of the much needed IPCMC could have led to these recent spate of events.

The question on everyone's lips now is who's protecting who? Private security companies should see an increase in business as people may have to resort to hiring their own bodyguards very soon.
